The Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) has opened an Expression of Interest (EOI) for HWSETA-registered employers to participate in the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Grant Programme for 2025–2026.

This opportunity is aimed at pathology laboratories and medical science laboratories that currently host — or plan to host — university students who must complete Work Integrated Learning (WIL) as part of their qualification.

What Is the HWSETA WIL Project?

The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Project supports students from Universities and Universities of Technology who are enrolled for WIL as a pre-degree requirement in health science laboratory programmes.

The funding is directed at employers, not students directly, to assist with stipend costs while students complete their required workplace learning.

Qualifications Covered

The WIL grant applies to students registered for the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Health Sciences in Medical Laboratory Science
  • Bachelor of Health Sciences in Clinical Technology Science

Only students who are currently studying and require WIL in 2026 qualify.

Important Exclusions (Read Carefully)

This opportunity excludes:

  • Students already funded by HWSETA through universities
  • Students funded by any donor or sponsor
  • Learners who would result in double dipping

Conditions Employers Must Meet

Employers hosting students for WIL must ensure the following:

  • Students remain registered university students during WIL
  • safe working environment is provided
  • Insurance cover is in place for:

  • WIL content is determined by the University, in consultation with employers and professional bodies
  • Assessment and certification remain the responsibility of the University
  • Students receive official workbooks, rubrics, and report templates

  • Fully accredited by the relevant professional body or council
  • Registered with HWSETA and in possession of a valid SDL number

    • Submitted WSP/ATR for 2026–2027
  • Organisation registration must be valid throughout the project
  • Submit a CIPC registration document (not older than 1 month)
  • Be willing to undergo site verification if required by HWSETA

Who Should Apply?

Compulsory Institutional Requirement

You must submit an official letter from your TVET College confirming that:

  • You require Work-Based Experience to complete your qualification

Stipend and Financial Support

Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend of R3 500 – R5 100, which helps with:

Selection Process

  • The assessment will be conducted at the TVET College where you apply
