About the Social Work Graduate Internship

The Graduate Intern Social Worker will report to the Hospital Manager and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) delivering evidence-based, ethical, and cost-effective mental healthcare services.

This opportunity is ideal for Social Work graduates seeking structured exposure in clinical and mental health social work within a professional healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities (Critical Outputs)

The intern will be expected to:

  • Contribute to and maintain the facility’s programme as an MDT member
  • Participate in patient programme planning, reviews, and adjustments
  • Support patient admission and discharge processes
  • Conduct assessments and develop care plans and Individual Development Plans (IDPs) with the MDT
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Social Development disability policies and relevant legislation
  • Liaise with external stakeholders and referral agencies
  • Support marketing initiatives, advocacy events, and community education programmes
  • Participate in continuous professional development (CPD) activities
  • Attend and actively contribute to MDT meetings

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12
  • Degree in Social Work
  • Current registration with SACSSP (South African Council for Social Service Professions)
  • valid driver’s licence
  • Knowledge of mental health legislation and policies (advantageous)
