If you’re a young South African looking to gain real workplace experience while earning a nationally recognised qualification, the Skills Development Corporation learnership programme could be your gateway to a strong start in your career. Learnerships combine formal training with hands‑on work exposure — helping you build skills and improve your employability while supporting businesses to meet B‑BBEE skills development goals.
Here’s a step‑by‑step breakdown of the student application process:
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible to apply as a learner with SDC, you must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be a B‑BBEE Black person (African, Indian or Coloured)
- Have a minimum of Grade 12
- Be between 18 and 28 years old
- Be available for a 12‑month learnership programme
- Attend mandatory practical training
- Be living with a disability or able‑bodied (both categories are supported)
Step 1: Join the Learner Sourcing Pool
The first step is to submit your details online to join the pool of learners SDC actively sources from. This helps them match you to learnership opportunities when they become available.
Both abled and disabled learners have separate online forms depending on your status and preferred campus (Johannesburg or Cape Town).
QUICK LINKS:
Step 2: Submit Required Documents
Even after submitting your online details, you’ll need to submit original documents in person at the SDC Campus in either Johannesburg or Cape Town. Required documents include:
- Updated CV (including any tertiary qualifications or work experience)
- Proof of residence
- Two certified copies of your highest school qualification
- Two certified copies of your ID
- A 3‑month bank statement (not older than 3 months)
- SARS tax number (Notice of Registration)
- Proof of disability (if applicable)
📍 Johannesburg Campus: 24 Achter Road, Paulshof, Sandton
📍 Cape Town Campus: Bloemhof Building, 112 Edward Street, Bellville
Submission times:
- Abled learners: Mondays, 8 am – 12 pm
- Disabled learners: Mondays (Johannesburg) & Monday–Friday (Cape Town), 8 am – 12 pm
Step 3: Documents Review
Once you’ve handed in your documents, SDC reviews them to ensure they’re valid and complete. If everything checks out, they’ll contact you for the next stage — an interview.
Step 4: Learner Interview
You’ll be invited to a short interview. This helps SDC learn more about your background, skills, and readiness for the learnership experience.
Step 5: Assessment Test
All applicants must write an assessment test. To move forward, you must score at least 80% — this ensures you’re prepared for both the classroom and workplace learning ahead.
Step 6: Validated Applicant Database
If you pass all previous steps, SDC will validate your application by reviewing your documents, interview notes, and assessment results. Once validated, your name enters the applicant database.
From here, you wait until you’re matched to a specific learnership based on employer demand.
Step 7: Learnership Enrolment
Once you’re selected for a learnership, SDC will invite you to the campus to:
- Sign your learnership contract
- Begin training and workplace learning
This is where your official learnership journey begins!

Quick Tips for Applicants
- Prepare and certify all required documents before submission.
- Bring originals even if you’ve applied online.
- Be ready for the interview and assessment test — preparation helps!
- Places are limited, so apply early and ensure your application is complete.
