Recipients may be required to participate in a vacation work programme at Cheadle Thompson & Haysom.
About the Scholarship
The scholarship was established in memory of Bhekisizwe Godfrey Mlangeni, a colleague and friend of the firm.
Mlangeni joined the firm in 1989 after graduating from Wits. A committed community activist and aspiring lawyer, he was tragically assassinated in 1991 during South Africa’s apartheid era. The scholarship honours his legacy and commitment to justice.
The scholarship aims to:
- Celebrate Mlangeni’s life and legacy
- Honour sacrifices made for South Africa’s democracy
- Promote progressive legal education
- Encourage commitment to constitutional values
Founded in 1979 by legal academics from Wits, Cheadle Thompson & Haysom Inc has grown into one of South Africa’s leading law firms, with offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be studying toward an LLB qualification
- Be entering their final year of LLB in 2026
- Be registered at Wits or UWC
- Be Black
- Demonstrate financial need
- Show strong commitment to legal studies
- Have a goal to advance social justice
- Have demonstrated academic excellence in:
- Labour Law
- Constitutional Law
- Administrative Law
Failure to meet any requirement may result in disqualification.
