Key Responsibilities
As a Train Assistant Trainee, you will be involved in:
Locomotive Preparation
- Sign on duty and receive shift allocations
- Prepare locomotives and equipment
- Assist with brake testing and locomotive start-up
- Couple locomotives and maintain the working area
Communication Equipment
- Check radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, and telemeters
- Ensure all communication tools are functional
Pre-Trip Train Preparation
- Conduct pre-trip checks and attach/detach vehicles
- Perform brake tests and complete vehicle lists
- Mount telemeters and train indicators
Shunting Activities
- Receive work orders and perform shunting
- Place and remove trucks at sidings
- Update vehicle lists
Enroute Assistance
- Compare signal positions with the Train Driver
- Observe safe train movement
- Protect the train during incidents and emergencies
- Complete train journals and submit reports

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics or Physical Science
- Minimum age: 21 years
- Minimum height: 1.6 metres
- Physically fit (hearing, vision, mental, general fitness)
- Psychomotor ability (assessed via Vienna Testing System – VTS standards)
- Willingness to carry heavy objects
- Commitment to complete both theoretical and practical training
Selection Process
