About the Food Service Aid Role

The Food Service Aid provides essential food preparation, cleaning, hygiene, and catering support services within the hospital environment. The role supports patient care by ensuring that meals are prepared, served, and handled according to health, safety, and quality standards.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 10 or equivalent qualification
  • 1–2 years’ experience in a hospital or healthcare environment
  • Ability to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays
  • Physically fit and able to cope with the demands of the position

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for:

  • Performing routine duties in the food service unit
  • Preparing food, snacks, and beverages (water, tea, coffee, milk, sugar, cold drinks)
  • Serving meals three times daily, including tea and coffee rounds
  • Cleaning kitchens, utensils, crockery, equipment, and food trolleys
  • Maintaining hygiene, safety, and quality control standards
  • Ensuring food trolleys are clean and neatly packed
  • Setting up and transporting crockery, cutlery, and equipment
  • Managing stock of kitchen utensils and reporting losses or waste
  • Removing garbage and disposing of waste correctly
  • Adhering to timelines and food service schedules
  • Attending training sessions and sectional meetings
  • Upholding Batho Pele Principles and professionalism
  • Treating patients, clients, and colleagues with dignity and respect
  • Complying with catering policies, OHSA, and departmental procedures
  • Participating in the Performance Management and Development System
